A fascinating mixture of medieval music, medieval poetry and modern electronics. Qntal (pronounced “Kaantall”) are Sigrid Hausen (Estampie), Ernst Horn (Deine Lakaien) and Michael Popp (Estampie und Deine Lakaien).

For quite some time they have been waiting for the debut CD of the project around Deine-Lakaien-keyboarder Ernst Horn. Together with Sigrid Hausen and Michael Popp (live musician at Deine Lakaien) Horn has taken up medieval themes and embedded them atmospherically into the current century. Nothing new, one could think and fall back on Dead Can Dance, but Qntal go further than the 4AD artists, because Qntal creates a symbiosis of medieval means and modern studio and equipment techniques, a strange atmosphere, over which the classical voice of Sigrid Hausen floats. Especially the slumbering wobbling sounds, which are known from the lackeys, inevitably dominate Qntal, because they are the first to be picked up. Traditional instruments like the fiddle and hurdy-gurdy subordinate themselves skilfully and yet in a way that creates atmosphere, while at the same time, with Cypernautian ideas, one picks up on house trends that don’t even seem out of place and casts a completely new light on longings that end in a - from today’s, transfigured point of view - romantic-nostalgic age, whose problems like the plague and crusades were not so far away from 1993.

The hit in the indie clubs and meanwhile a classic is the album track “Ad mortem festinamus”!

NOTES Music Magazine

So there are records that can put you under a very special spell from the very first moment. And this concept album is without a doubt one of them. By the way, Qntal speaks Kantal and is the new project of Ernst Horn, mastermind of the German dark waver Deine Lakaien. Musically situated somewhere between Dead Can Dance and Bel Canto, this cycle of twelve songs is a bridge between the Middle Ages and postmodernism. The texts are centuries-old poems, sung partly in Old French, partly in Latin, partly in Middle High German. This poetry is embedded in sometimes heavy, sometimes gripping electronic sounds, which are enriched with original instruments such as shawm, fiddle or turntable. And so the twelve titles gradually wind their way into your ears almost imperceptibly like a strangely touching dream. A wonderful record with a powerful charisma that is certainly without equal. Simply an experience!

PRINZ City Mag 1993

A fascinating idea: medieval texts and melodies with electronic sound magic. Qntal is a project of Deine Lakaien- Keyboarder Ernst Horn. He is supported by Michael Popp, who already used medieval string instruments on the last Lakaien CD "Dark Star Tour". Sigrid Hausen (Estampie) took over the vocals for this interesting work. Songs like "Unter der Linden" or " Floris e Blanchaflor" are dreamy sound paintings to enjoy. In contrast to this the track "Black Death" (an allusion to AIDS). Thought as a reference to the New York disco "Jackie 60", this track is not only the longest on the CD, but also danceable. A dramatic-romantic CD, created by extraordinary musicians.
